About

A remarkable Mughal monument in Sheikhupura, built by Emperor Jahangir in memory of his beloved pet deer Mansi. A 30-metre octagonal tower rises from the centre of an artificial lake, connected to a pavilion on the shore by a causeway - the ensemble of red sandstone minaret, pavilion, and serene water creates one of the most unusual and touching monuments in all of Pakistan.

History

Hiran Minar was built by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir (r. 1605–1627) to commemorate Mansi, a tame deer that had been his favourite companion for many years. Jahangir, known for his passion for nature and his meticulous nature journal (the Jahangirnama), was devastated by Mansi's death and ordered the construction of a towered mausoleum in the deer's honour. The complex was expanded by Shah Jahan, who added the octagonal tank, the central platform with its pavilion, and the causeway. The site was later used as a hunting reserve by the Mughals - Sheikhupura, the nearest city, is itself named after Jahangir (whose birth name was Sheikhoo). The monument fell into disuse under the Sikhs and was restored by the Archaeological Survey of Pakistan in the post-independence period.
