About

Gateway to the world's highest peaks — K2, Broad Peak, and the Gasherbrums — Skardu sits in a vast high-altitude basin carved by the Indus River. A unique landscape of cold desert dunes, emerald lakes, and ancient Buddhist heritage.

History

Skardu was the capital of the Maqpon dynasty and a key trading hub on the trans-Himalayan Silk Road. The British established a garrison here in the 19th century, and the town played a pivotal role in the 1948 war between Pakistan and India for control of Baltistan.
