About

Known as the 'Switzerland of the East', Swat is a wide, fertile valley with a mild climate, lush meadows, fast-flowing rivers, and rich Buddhist heritage. The upper valley transitions into high alpine terrain near Kalam and Ushu.

History

Swat was the ancient kingdom of Udyana — a major Buddhist centre visited by Chinese pilgrim Xuanzang in 630 AD. It came under Muslim influence in the 11th century. The Yusufzai Pashtun tribe established dominance in the 16th century. Swat was a princely state until 1969.
