About

A remote canyon and seasonal waterfall area in the Kirthar hills of northern Sindh, where a narrow limestone gorge channels a seasonal stream through dramatically eroded rock walls. One of the most visually striking natural features accessible from the Kirthar National Park area, Taung rewards the adventurous traveller with solitude, wildlife, and raw geological scenery utterly unlike the flat Sindh plains below.

History

Taung sits within the Kirthar range - a fold mountain belt that was uplifted from an ancient seabed when the Indian plate collided with Eurasia. Marine fossils, including ancient shark teeth and shells, are visible in the exposed limestone walls of the gorge. The area was historically a seasonal grazing route for nomadic Baloch and Brahui pastoralists moving their herds between Sindh's winter plains and the cooler Kirthar hills in summer - a transhumance pattern that continues in modified form today.
