About

A picturesque town in the Chakwal district nestled in the Salt Range, centred on a saline lake of striking blue-green water. Long a stopover for travellers on the Grand Trunk Road and now the Lahore–Islamabad Motorway, Kallar Kahar is famous for its Mughal connections, the hilltop Kallar Kahar Fort, the ancient Katas Raj temple complex, and the shaded gardens of Babur's era that still partly survive.

History

Kallar Kahar holds a special place in South Asian history as the spot where Mughal emperor Babur camped in 1519 and 1520 during his early campaigns into the subcontinent. He described the lake and its surroundings in the Baburnama - his celebrated memoir - admiring the water and the landscape. Babur is said to have laid out a formal charbagh garden here, the predecessor of the great Mughal garden tradition later seen at Lahore and Agra. The Salt Range above the town has been mined since antiquity, and the nearby Katas Raj temple complex - where the Pandavas of the Mahabharata are said to have spent years of their exile - attests to the area's ancient religious significance.
