About

A fertile mountain valley southwest of Quetta, renowned throughout Pakistan for its vast orchards of apples, cherries, apricots, peaches, and almonds. In spring the valley erupts into a sea of white and pink blossom; in autumn it is laden with fruit. Rocky peaks frame the green valley floor, creating a landscape of unusual beauty for arid Balochistan.

History

Urak Valley has been cultivated for centuries by Baloch and Brahui farming communities who developed sophisticated karez (underground irrigation channel) systems to channel meltwater from surrounding peaks through the valley's orchards. The British developed a rest house in the valley for officers escaping Quetta's dusty summers, and the valley's fruit was prized enough to be sent by rail to markets as far as Karachi and Lahore. Post-independence, the valley became famous nationally for its apple varieties - the 'Kala Kulu' apple of Urak is considered among the finest grown anywhere in Pakistan.
