About

A stunning turquoise lake formed in 2010 when a massive landslide blocked the Hunza River, submerging the village of Attabad and several kilometres of the Karakoram Highway. Now a popular boat trip destination with dramatically coloured water.

History

The landslide of January 4, 2010 killed 20 people and displaced thousands. The lake took five months to form and reach its current size. NESPAK engineers eventually constructed tunnels to bypass the flooded KKH section, reopened in 2015.
