About

The second-highest plateau in the world — a vast, treeless grassland blanketed in wildflowers each summer. A critical habitat for the Himalayan brown bear and snow leopard, protected as Deosai National Park.

History

Deosai means 'Land of Giants' in Shina. Historically used as a summer migration route by Balti and Shina nomads, the plateau was rarely visited by outsiders until the 20th century. The national park was established in 1993 primarily to protect the brown bear population.
