About

A fertile valley of apricot orchards and ancient villages east of Skardu, carved by the Shigar River flowing down from the Karakoram. The restored Shigar Fort palace is one of Pakistan's finest examples of Balti-Tibetan architecture.

History

Shigar was the seat of the Amacha Rajas — one of Baltistan's most powerful ruling dynasties — who maintained close cultural ties with Ladakh and Tibet. The fort-palace, built in the 17th century, fell into disrepair after the abolition of the princely states and was painstakingly restored by the Aga Khan Historic Cities Programme.
