About

The main town of upper Swat, where the Swat River meets the Ushu and Gabral streams in a forested basin. A hub for treks into Mahodand Lake, Ushu Valley, and Gabral Valley — offering dramatic scenery that transitions from pine forests to high alpine meadows.

History

Kalam was historically the northern frontier of the Swat Princely State, a buffer zone between the rulers of Swat and the tribal mountain communities beyond. Its strategic position at the confluence of three river valleys made it a seasonal trading post for nomadic Gujjar herdsmen.
