About

A lush side valley branching north from Kalam, renowned for its ancient Deodar cedar and blue-pine forests. The 25 km drive from Kalam to Matiltan is widely considered one of the most scenic forest roads in Pakistan.

History

The Ushu forests were historically managed by the princely state of Swat, which strictly controlled timber extraction. After accession to Pakistan in 1969, illegal logging caused significant damage before conservation laws were enforced in the 1990s.
