About

The main town of Chitral district, straddling the Chitral River at the foot of Tirich Mir — the highest peak in the Hindu Kush (7,708m). A cultural crossroads between Central Asia, Afghanistan, and South Asia.

History

Chitral was the seat of the Katur dynasty for centuries. The 1895 Siege of Chitral — where a British garrison held out for 46 days against Chitrali and Pashtun forces — became a celebrated episode of the Great Game era.
