About

Three isolated valleys — Bumburet, Rumbur, and Birir — home to the Kalash people, one of the world's smallest and most distinct ethnic minorities. The Kalash maintain a pre-Islamic polytheistic religion, unique festivals, and a colourful dress tradition unlike anything else in Pakistan.

History

The origins of the Kalash remain debated — local legend claims descent from soldiers of Alexander the Great's army, though genetic and linguistic evidence points to an ancient pre-Indo-Aryan population. The Kalash numbered around 100,000 in the 19th century; today only ~4,000 remain.
